The Science Behind Reiki
In recent years of facilitating Reiki on clients, I have seen many incredible things happen. It is such a subtle yet powerful healing modality! Let me see if I can demystify this particular technique and show you the tremendous benefits that it can bring you.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered with various hand placements on the body and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
Rei – means “Universal” or the wisdom of God or the “Higher Power”
Ki – means the vital life force energy which flows through all that is alive
Reiki – means “spiritually guided life force energy”

What Happens in a Reiki Treatment?
What is the relation between the earth’s magnetic field, the practitioner and the receiver of a Reiki Treatment?
Many independent researches have been done on this subject by different doctor and professors over time, such as Dr. Robert Becker, Dr. John Zimmerman of the U.S.A., Dr. Seto of Japan and Professors in the 80’s & 90’s and they have come to certain conclusions such as:
- The correlation with the Reiki practitioner, receiver and brain waves patterns! As per Dr. Robert Becker and Dr. Jon Zimmerman, the brain wave patterns become synchronized in the Alpha State, which is characteristic of deep relaxation and meditation.
- Would you be surprised to find out that the earth’s magnetic field known as Schumann Resonance and Reiki have a connection!? Not only there is synchronization of the brain wave patterns but they also pulse in unison with the earth’s magnetic field, know as the Schumann Resonance , because of it.
- There is large pulsating bio magnetic field emitted from the hands of energy practitioners at least 1000 times greater than normal. This link allows the practitioner to draw on a “universal energy field” via that Schumann Resonance.
- And that links us to a quantum physics view in which everything is somewhat connected and referred as sometime a “living universe” or “living web of interdependence” which supports the “oneness” or “expanded Consciousness” subjective experiences from those who receive Reiki treatment.
- As established the same brains waves mentioned earlier are in the frequency range of 0.3-30Hz which stimulates healing of the body as well. By sweeping the body up down in that frequency range, it is found that focusing mostly in 1-8Hz is the Alpha State. Independent medical research has found that using specific frequencies such as 2Hz, would encourage nerve regeneration, 7 Hz bone regeneration, 10Hz ligament mending and 15Hz capillary formation. Currently many physiotherapy equipment’s are based on these principles and designed to aid soft tissue regeneration. As well as ultrasound technology that is commonly used for clearing clogged arteries and disintegrate kidney stones.
- For many years/decades, placing an electrical coil around a fracture that refuses to mend will stimulate bone growth and repair, PEMF (Pulse Electro Magnetic Field) Therapy being a prime example.
- Dr. Becker further explains that “brain waves” are not confined to the brain but travel throughout the body by the perineural system; the sheaths of connective tissue surrounding all nerves. During treatment, these waves begin as relatively weak pulses in the thalamus of the practitioner’s brain and gather cumulative strength as they flow to the peripheral nerves of the body including the hands. The same effect is mirrored in the person receiving treatment, and he suggests that it is this system more than any other, that regulates injury repair and system rebalance. This highlights one of the special features of Reiki (and similar therapies) – that both practitioner and client receive the benefits of a treatment, which makes it very efficient.
- It is also noteworthy to mention that Dr. Becker did this study world-wide, cross-cultural, different belief systems or customs, all subjects tested the same. Part of Reiki’s growing popularity is that it does not impose a set of beliefs and can therefore be used by people of any background and faith, or none. This neutrality makes it particularly appropriate to a medical or prison setting.
